It was just over a year ago that I began to seriously consider running for mayor. Since then I have been reminded more than ever before just how lucky I am to have a beautiful and supportive family and a host of devoted friends and colleagues. I’m also fortunate to have had the opportunity to live my entire life in a city that I love, the city that I want very much to lead as mayor into the second decade of the twenty-first century.
Under the current administration, life in Beckley has been pretty good. We’ve seen Beckley as well as Raleigh County position themselves for economic growth and at a time when most of the country is feeling the pinch of our current economic downturn, we are not facing the budget shortfalls and uncertainty many other cities and states are experiencing.
However, my foremost concern for Beckley and what prompted me to run for mayor is the apparent disconnect that residents feel with our municipal government and its affect on our communities and future economic growth. It’s almost as though there are two Beckleys. One for the business elites and the politicians they support, and one where the rest of us live.
I believe that the next mayor must bring people together from all parts of our city regardless of what neighborhood they live in or their background. I believe, as so many of you do, that we all have a special responsibility and desire to contribute something of ourselves to the common good. That’s why I will be going door to door throughout this campaign not only to introduce myself as a candidate but more so to share with you my vision for the future and the many opportunities our city has to offer.
I promise you an all-out, open and vigorous campaign for Beckley unique from any other you’ve ever seen. Most importantly I intend to govern as I have campaigned, reaching out to residents, listening to their concerns and responding to their questions as clearly and as specifically as I can. I am certain that once we restore public confidence we will began moving Beckley forward again and experience true economic growth.
I ask that all of you join all of us in our grassroots quest, not just to elect Beckley’s next mayor, but to help build the best Beckley ever.

| The Fight For What's Right. |
| Despite strong public opposition, all but two members of Beckley Common Council voted to move another step closer to eliminating the city’s primary elections during Tuesday night’s public hearing.  What is even more confusing about council’s vote to move the proposed plan forward is that it appears all sides are in agreement about the fact that a better alternative would be to align city elections with the state’s off-year election cycle. | The fight for open city government. |
| The decision to change the city's election procedure would appear to be an important opportunity for meaningful citizen participation. Yet on an issue that is as public as it gets, our city leaders have made little or no effort, beyond what is required by law, to inform the public on their decision, let alone make an effort to involve us in the decision making process.
